Winning the war in the spiritual
Jeff Pike

Well here we are, our very first blog on our brand new website. I am just so excited to be able to share with you in what God is already doing through this Church we are pioneering.

If you just happened to stumble across this site, welcome! My name is Jeff Pike and I am the Lead Pastor of this new Church plant called Groundswell Church.

My beautiful Aussie wife Mika and I are in the midst of gathering a team who are going to help us launch a life-giving Church here in the west end of Toronto. It has been quite the journey so far, and we know that our most exciting days are ahead of us.

After graduating Bible college, we moved back to Canada, with hearts full of expectancy. We knew that we wanted to see the city of Toronto impacted by the gospel, it was all just a matter of when. We finally moved to the High Park area in August, 2013 and God has taught us nothing but just to hold onto Him because He is faithful.

I spend every day talking with people in our neighbourhood and hearing their stories. So many people who have come from Church backgrounds, and others who want nothing to do with it. It’s funny to hear them share their perspective on what they think about the Church as a whole.

Many opinions come from a place of deep hurt and anger, others are indifferent. But one thing that I have learned is that people are so much more open to the gospel than we ever realize. Its amazing how we can allow the fear of what people might think stop us from stepping out and actually sharing our faith.

Mika and I meet with our team weekly to talk about the vision and the core values of Groundswell Church. It has been the greatest thing for us to do as a team, to really establish WHO we are as a Church community and to make it so clear for others who will join us. But in December of last year I felt like the Holy Spirit was telling me that these strategy meetings weren’t enough.

I felt strongly convicted that in order to really have the kind impact that we could have, we need to win the war in the spiritual. And that means a STRONG prayer life.

Having a great service, with an amazing light show and really cool stage design is not what is going to reach our city. While all those things really do help, if we don’t learn to be prayer warriors then we have missed it completely.

I felt so strongly that in our prayer lives we needed to be walking with Jesus so closely to know His heart. There is nothing more heart-breaking than the thought of His own Church forgetting her first love.

Revelation 2:4 [Amplified]
But I have this [one charge to make] against you: that you have left (abandoned) the love that you had at first [you have deserted Me, your first love].

We enter into eternity with empty pockets, all we can take with us is people. And for us to really reach people, we need to know God’s heart for them.

So each week, our team gathers on Wednesday night, and we storm heaven with fervent prayers for the lost. It is incredible to see how these nights have actually been the foundation of this Church. I can actually see a revival starting and the power of prayer is so evident in our own lives. We have already seen people experience God’s healing, breakthrough, and now we are believing for salvation in our city to come from the prayers of our faithful team.

God is waiting to do a new thing in our city, we have met enough broken, hurting people to know that they need someone to fight for them. So that is what we are doing. We are going to win this thing in the spiritual, while we build a Church that will be a light in our city. I am believing that we are only just starting to see the tip of the iceberg of what God is going to do through His Church.

I am also aware that there is a company of prayer warriors out there covering us in prayer as we build this Church, you are our greatest encouragers. We could not be doing this without your faith and belief in what God can do. Thank you for cheering us on, we need you!

As we continue on with these weekly prayer nights and making a mark in our city, I hope that you will join us and be standing in faith with us wherever you might be.

Let’s do this!
